Getting our start in warehousing
In 1993, Jerry Morris and Wayne Ruck purchased an old factory in Weyers Cave, VA while still maintaining a box manufacturing business. This began their first foray into warehousing. They hired Devon Anders and a few short years later in 1997, they constructed their first warehouse in Harrisonburg as they left the manufacturing business to focus on this new venture, appropriately named The Warehouse Company.
Creating InterChange and rapid expansion
The team entered the new millennium with ten employees and five warehouses. Twenty-five years later, our numbers are over 150 employees and eighteen warehouses, concentrated in the Shenandoah Valley. Along with growth came a new name in 2005: InterChange Group. In 2006, we expanded north to Front Royal. More recently, we’ve acquired buildings in Portsmouth, Verona, and Winchester. The latest project on the horizon is a new cold storage facility in Mt. Crawford, VA, near Interstate 81, one of the major truck routes along the east coast.
Adapting to the changing economy
With Interstate 81, 66, and 64 as major transportation corridors, our locations work well for our third party logistics and transportation services that has around 40 trucks and over 150 trailers. In addition, InterChange leases and develops locally, having worked with the federal government, large corporations like Walmart, DanoneWave, and Rosetta Stone, and smaller companies like Valley Engineering. InterChange has an ongoing relationship with Able Solutions, an enterprise that works with those seeking jobs who have barriers to employment.
Planning for the future
InterChange continues to grow and expand in the Shenandoah Valley and Hampton Roads. Recently we opened the Portsmouth Logistics Center, a 200,000 sq/ft facility in the Port of Virginia that gives our customers access to sea ports, the Hampton Roads beltway, and the entire Mid-Atlantic region.
As of March 2019 we also are continuing construction on our Cold Storage facility in Mt. Crawford, VA that will serve the needs of the region’s growing food and beverage industries. This state of the art refrigerated facility will be up to 600,000 sq/ft with over 80,000 pallet positions.
InterChange and the community
We strive to participate in the local community by sponsoring local sports teams and supporting charities like Hope Distributed and the Rockingham Educational Foundation. Our goals include responsible development by following regulations, centering our planning on the long term, and helping to create jobs by working cooperatively with the Shenandoah Valley Partnership.
We want to grow together as a dynamic company that engages with the community around us. Our priority is to give you the tools you need to perform your job safely. We’ll be counting on you to be flexible, innovative, and proactive. We’re excited to have you join our team and look forward to seeing all you accomplish!
